Some thoughts from February 14 to March 6:
These past three weeks have been crazy. School has picked up, especially since I have been missing class much more often for track and field meets. I don't have my journal caught up for these past three weeks yet, so I am just going to give some general thoughts on how my training and racing has been going. I'll start with the weekend of March 5 and work my way backwards.
We ran the DMR at Notre Dame, and we ran pretty well. I didn't feel that we ran quite as fast as we can, but I am really happy with the outcome and the effort put in by all four guys on our relay team. The Notre Dame trip was a blast for me, probably the most fun I've had on a track trip ever. We had a small group (just the men's and women's DMR), and it was fun to spend some time with people that I normally don't hang out with a lot. The competition up there was tremendous; both heats of the DMR ran pretty fast. Michigan obviously ran really fast. I was quite nervous during the race because I had managed to get myself into a box again, and I didn't know if I was going to be able to get out. On the last lap, some room opened up and I was able to get around some people. I wasn't feeling too well this trip. I woke up with a sore throat the day that we left, so I was anxious about that as well. In the end, everything worked out pretty well.
This past week my mileage was pretty low (around 50) because I was basically resting up for the race at Notre Dame. I did a short workout on Tuesday, and the rest of the week I just did distance runs.
Last weekend at Big 12's our team did pretty well. We were all rearing to go for this trip because last year our men's team got last place. This year we ended up being sixth, so I was pretty happy with that. I ran the DMR on Friday night and the 3000 on Saturday afternoon. We won the DMR pretty easily in 9:47, so that was pretty fun. On Saturday I got third place in the 3000 with a personal best time of 8:10. This was only the fourth 3k of my career, so I was a little unsure of how to run. I ended up making a late move to pass some guys, and I thought I might catch the Texas guy to get second, but he beat me by a little bit.
The two weeks leading up to Big 12's my mileage was right around 60, and I had a couple good quality workouts during this period as well.
Good luck and safe travels to all who are competing at Nationals.
