Florida State's Walter Dix was a scratch, even after his 6.63 performance at Iowa State last weekend. Head coach Bob Braman was kind enough to offer the reasoning behind the move. The training sessions at LSU between Thompson and Holliday must be intense, which is why the champion is going to be from Baton Rouge. I look for Holliday to take the sprint at 6.55 which would be an amazing feat after only training two months for the event due to football.

Rubin Williams has been on fire all season long. His speed coming off the final turn is unmatched this season and is my favorite for the title. With Dix out of the 60, he should be well rested for the 200 and most people still wonder about his fitness so far this season. Dix also appears to be the easy pick here because of what he's done in the past. Don't get me wrong, he may just win the darn thing, but I haven't see anything from him up to this point in the season to put him over the top. I'm sure it will come back to bite me. Dixon of Sacred Heart has shown promise after this 20.66 at the speedy Boston University track. Look for Williams to go out on top with his first national title and for the Seminoles to pick up some big team points in this event.

Here is an event that is so wide open, it's perhaps the most difficult to predict of all the men's events. My gut tells me that Miles Smith will come through, after watching him run strong at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational last month. He's also coming off a year with an injury and is well rested to win an event like this. I can see Gaymon, Smith, Bain coming out on top as well. I just think Smith will have the strength to win in the end.

The surprise of the field has to be Abraham Mach of Central Michigan who clocked 1:47.33 at Notre Dame last weekend. The MAC Champion clocked 1:52.70 in the event just two weeks ago at Eastern Michigan. What does this tell us? For starters, running on an oversized track such as Notre Dame has its advantages. I can't see Mach dropping his time even more in a fierce competition although I'm rooting for him as I'm a former MAC athlete myself. I'm still impressed with Koech of UTEP who should be primed to hit the 1:46 range just fine.

The talk of the weekend was certainly AJ Acosta's performance at Washington which bettered Pre's indoor school-record time. Yes, Pre did not have the luxury to compete on ovals over 300 meters. Even Acosta stated afterwards how humble he was of the performance. You have to lean towards Leonel Manzano of Texas who's proved in the past to show up when it counts. Georgetown's Andrew Bumbalough, who had the fastest time in the nation at 3:58.46 set at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, decided to give the 3,000 meters a shot instead of the mile. BYU's Kyle Perry also entered in the 3,000 with his fifth-best clocking of 3:59.16. Will it be a tactical race or one that will feature a few sub-4 performances? I've got to believe that the coaches are telling their athletes to go out and run fast. Sitting back and waiting to kick at the end could prove costly.

With some of the top milers (Perry, Bumbalough) choosing to compete in the 3,000, it should provide plenty of excitement. Can McDougal pull off the 3k-5k double? Yes. As noted in my preview of the 3,000, McDougal should come out on top in the 5,000 on Friday night. His focus will certainly, just like anyone, be on this race and not looking ahead to the 3,000 the following day. Can Williams or Korir challenge him? Certainly. I just can't see McDougal losing this race for the final time in his indoor collegiate career. This is also the event where Arkansas usually looks to score big points in. Can Strang,

Events such as the 4x400 meter relay is why this meet should be shown on live TV. We'll all have to wait until March 20 on ESPN2, so you'll have to put up with the refresh button. Picking against Baylor is something no one should do. They can come into the meet running 3:07.50 and they would still be a favorite to win. With a nearly five second difference and world-record performance, Texas will win the DMR on Friday night. Can they lower their own record set on the same track? With
Manzano and Miller competing in the mile prelims and
Hernandez in the 800 prelims a few hours earlier, it may be difficult to beat. Arkansas will be right on their heels with the "home" crowd behind them. Will it be enough to overtake the Longhorns?

Quick, what is 2.29 meters in feet and inches? With our handy conversion calculator, we can quickly determine that it's 7-06! Don't we all have one handy? I still don't understand to this day why the NCAA (or any school, for that matter) isn't consistent with the way they publish field event marks. Either do both or pick one. Don't have a mixed bag so the fans don't understand what they're reading. If the NCAA publishes their official list in meters, then all schools should follow suit. Sorry, I had to get that out of the way. Back to the event at hand. Scott Sellers of Kansas State has impressed me so much this season, it's funny to look back at some of the comments some people made during his freshman year. Armchair quarterbacks are never coaches for a reason. The Big 12 battle between Sellers and Nebraska's Dusty Jonas will be fun to watch if you're lucky enough to have tickets. Don't look for ESPN2 to show more than one jump.

Post-grad Rory Quiller has shown promise to shine at the next level. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hoste or Scott step up and take the title, but this will be
Quiller's day. It should also be mentioned about the depth at BYU. They had four athletes crack the top 17 this season, with all clearing at least 5.32m (that's 17-05.50 or the height of a large overpass at your local high school).

Frederick has all the talent in the world to win this event. The west coast is definately being represented in this event as well. Makusha will be key to Florida State's title run as the freshman will have a lot on his shoulders.

Boutte's been the most consistent jumper all season long. I can never lean towards an athlete to win an event such as the triple jump when their marks are always met at high altitude, so I'm having a difficult time placing Ryan Grinnell of Boise State very high. I really think Balumbu of Arkansas will pull through and come up big for the Hogs with 10 points.

1. Nkosinza Balumbu, Arkansas (10)

Winger or Whiting? Whiting or Winger?
Finkle or Einhorn? Had to throw in an Ace Ventura reference there. I'm torn between the two that I'm going to flip a coin to determine the winner. It looks like
Zack Lloyd of Arizona is the man.

With names like Agafonov, Rohr, Dunkleberger, Kocsor and Schutz, you know this is not a sprinting event. The Russian from Kansas is my pick and I really like what freshman Henning has shown this year. I think he's primed for a few titles during his career. He'll just have to wait until next year.

Message to the folks who put this list together: UNI can mean Northern Illinois, Nothern Indiana, Northern Idaho or Northern Irregular. Is "UNI" an abbreviation that most people understand, say, like UCLA? Northern Iowa has fewer letters than North Carolina, yet we don't see UNC. Hey John Wise, it's Witchita State, not Wichita St. Just kidding. I'm picking the senior based out of Cedar Falls.
