Sigl is a junior at UW-Platteville. At the Midwest Regional cross country championships he defended his individual title, helping the men’s team earn a trip to nationals by placing 3rd. He finished 10th individually at the 2006 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, leading his team to a 26th place finish.

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself (where you’re from, what high school you went to, how you got started running)?
I am from Seymour, WI., a little town about 20 minutes west of Green Bay. I went to Seymour High School which has about 800 students. Growing up I loved football. It wasn’t until my sophomore year in high school that one of my older brother’s friend talked me into joining cross country. I participated in track and field starting in 7th grade.
What were your PR's in high school (cross country and track)?
In track, I never really ran any fast times until my senior year. At the state meet I ran a 8 sec. pr in the 1600m run by running 4:22 and about a 18 sec pr in the 3200m run by running 9:34. Occasionally I ran the 800m run. My best in that was 2:00. In cross country my pr was 16:04.
What are your current PR's (cross country and track)?
This year I ran a new pr in cross country running 24:23 at the Jim Drews Invite in LaCrosse, WI. In track, my pr’s are 1:55 in the 800, 4:11 in the mile, 8:32 in the 3k, 14:39 in the 5k, and 30:18 in the 10k.
What was your training like this past summer?
This past summer I had a lot of time off from training. In the middle of June I found out that I had a hernia and had to get surgery. I got surgery one of the last days of June, taking a week off before surgery, about two weeks off after surgery, and then biked for about two weeks. Then, I started slowly to build my mileage back up until I was once again back up to where I was at during track season.
How has your training progressed over the years from high school to now (cross country and track)?
In high school I would say that I did about 30 miles a week. I never really kept track of my mileage or minutes, I would just go out and run at 6 min pace for however long coach told me to go. Now in college, coach has upped my max and posts the workouts that we are to do. I’ve learned to keep my hard days hard and my easy days easy.
What has your training consisted of over the past couple of weeks?
Since our regional course is flat and the nationals course appears to be flat, we’ve been doing tempos on flat stuff and I’ve been doing basic cruise minutes.
What is your favorite workout(s) during the cross country season and what does it include?
My favorite workout is Stumptown road with 800s at the bottom. Stumptown is a road with about a mile and a quarter long progressive hill on it, at the bottom, the road is flat. We run to the bottom of the hill, do 2-3 800s, then do 2-4 hills at 80-85% with a jog back down in between for rest. It’s a hard workout that I may say that I hate when I’m doing it but I love it when I’m done.
Last year at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships you set the pace right away taking the lead and crossing the mile in 4:54. Could you tell us a little bit about this experience and your thoughts looking back at this race?
I learned a lot about how to race last year at nationals. Two guys got after it right away and I went with them and they faded back before the mile. Not knowing any better I kept pushing it along, leaving myself as a sitting duck waiting to be eaten up. When the four mile mark came, I got eaten up but thankfully was able to hold on and still end up fourth overall. Looking back, I realized that I should have faded back with the other two guys and ran with Yuot and the other front runners. Had I done this I feel that could have possibly won. Had it been a flat course, my technique on that day may have worked. Oh well, now I know better for this year and the years to come.
What are your goals heading into Regionals and Nationals (individual and team)?

Individually the goal is to repeat as regional champ and to hopefully win nationals. Team wise we want to be top 3 at regionals and top 4 at nationals (Editor’s Note: Sigl did defend his title and the UW-Platteville Pioneers placed third at the Midwest Regional. He finished 10th at nationals, leading his team to a 26th place finish.)
Do you have a pre-race routine? If so, could you describe it for us?
My only pre-race routine is to eat pasta the night before races. Then come race day, just run fast.
What do you like the most about UW-Platteville Cross Country?

We have a great team here and a program that is headed in the right direction.
Thanks to Tyler for a great interview.
