What makes an XC champion? (Women)

“Steeplers almost never win cross. Anybody know how many XC champs have also won the steeple? Yuot did it in his nationals triple, but the steeple was more of a side project for him than his actual race. Below is a full listing of cross country national champions.  Primary track event was determined by taking each runner’s top finish from track national championships.  All track championships are outdoors unless otherwise noted.  Runners were national champions in their primary track event except where their highest finish is otherwise noted parenthetically.
